Spirit Day [Oct. 3rd, 2010|10:17 am]
Friendly Families

Originally posted by neo_prodigy at Spirit Day

It’s been decided. On October 20th, 2010, we will wear purple in honor of the 6 gay boys who committed suicide in recent weeks/months due to homophobic abuse in their homes at at their schools. Purple represents Spirit on the LGBTQ flag and that’s exactly what we’d like all of you to have with you: spirit. Please know that times will get better and that you will meet people who will love you and respect you for who you are, no matter your sexuality. Please wear purple on October 20th. Tell your friends, family, co-workers, neighbors and schools.

RIP Justin Aaberg, Raymond Chase (middle)
RIP Asher Brown and Billy Lucas. (bottom)

REBLOG to spread a message of love, unity and peace.

ABC's "20/20" from 27 April 2007, with Barbara Walters (!) talking to three transgender children and their families. Video is in three parts, here.

Ouch. [Dec. 27th, 2006|08:33 am]
Friendly Families

[mood |curiouscurious]

I just shelled out for three more years of friendlyfamilies.org, and nothing motivates like feeling I'm throwing money to the wind.
Time, I suppose, to really start getting the word out; I have relied on word of mouth till now.
But before I do that, a question; should we open up to intentional families for any reason? It's not just LGBT folk that are rejected by or simply don't have their birth families, after all.

90 Day Notice [Oct. 3rd, 2006|11:09 am]
Friendly Families

[mood |worriedworried]

The other day, I got the 90 day notice for the expiration of the friendlyfamilies.org domain name. The thing that bothers me about that is not that I have to renew it, but that there's still nothing going on. I'm afraid I don't have the skills necessary to make this thing go, and I can't seem to find the people who do.
We need a place where people can match up, a way for them to match up, the appropriate legalese written, and we need to reach the people interested in doing this from both sides.
Ideas? Help?

Redone icons [Aug. 22nd, 2006|08:35 am]

I redid the two frontrunners as .png files and I think they're coming up much crisper. Here they are. :)

Possible Icons [Aug. 14th, 2006|08:47 pm]

[mood |artistic]

jenny_evergreen asked me to post these. For whatever reason, they seem more crisp in Paint-Shop Pro than they do as saved images seen through another viewer. But someone with a better graphics program could probaby clean it up more.

Let me know if anyone can crisp these up a bit. :D

I started googling, because, as Ace pointed out, the community doesn't have an icon. I didn't find much right off the bat, but I was thinking anyway. We need a logo!
So...design one if you will and post it in the comments and either I'll pick one (assuming there are choices!) or everyone will love one and that's the one we'll use. :)

I filled out the community profile a bit more; go take a look and give me your feedback.
It's time to get moving on this again; sorry it's languished due to my busy life!
Let's try and get some more people involved, get the word out a bit, and get this thing growing!
We need to build a questionaire; what do people want and need to know about each other to match up?
Off the top of my head, I can think of location, cultural affiliations, religious affiliations, general make-up of the families (number of people, age ranges, roles able/willing to take on, etc.)...what else?

Expectations [Dec. 28th, 2005|03:21 pm]
Friendly Families

[mood |productive]

(Maybe this should end up in the stay-at-the-top post when it's done.)

There are some expectations for families. Everyone in the family has to be on board. (Everyone has a Rotten Uncle or something, but the nuclear unit should be on board, with the extended tolerant or not involved.) Ideally, they should be realistic age-relationships. (For example, at 32, I'm really too young to be in the mother-role to someone who's 18.) Those are the big ones I've been thinking about; any others?

What about expectations for adoptees? Reasonably self-sufficient? (We don't want people who are just looking for someone to sponge off of or something.) We might want to make an option for families willing to take someone actually into their homes, but we'd have to have a bunch of legal jargon and stuff, and I don't know if the risk (to the families as well as the project) is worth it. What do you think? Any other expectations for adoptees?

Who We Are and What We Do [Dec. 27th, 2028|05:37 pm]
Friendly Families

So, I wrote something intensely boring, if correct, here. What do you think should go here? How do you think it should be written? Give me your thoughts, and I'll ultimately edit accordingly. :)
